Lee Kum Kee Char Siu Sauce

Anise, fennel, cinnamon, cloves, and sichuan peppercorns are combined with five spice powder to create a sauce that is sweet, salty, and has a distinct Asian flavour from the fermented soy in the hoisin. A good char siu dish contains complex flavours that complement the pork and enable it to stand alone with only a simple mound of steamed rice and blanched choy sum. It also has a salty/sweet contrast and a hint of spiciness.
